Landmark responded to Jasper National Park’s Request for Proposals to coordinate and facilitate an ecologically-based method of managing forest fuels to reduce wildfire risk within the Park. Landmark’s proposal included innovative, yet practical, techniques on how to efficiently operate under the strict environmental standards required by Parks Canada. The projects, one using conventional equipment on gentle slopes and the other using a spyder hoe on steep slopes up to 80%, were conducted during the winter months from 2006 – 2011.

Landmark’s project highlights include:

  • Ecosystem restoration of ~450ha within Jasper National Park
  • Subcontracting of logging contractors and log hauling companies
  • Marketing logs to supplement funding for the project
  • In extremely poor market conditions, created a “log” market by processing the volume into firewood on site (1300 cords in 6 weeks) and selling it to various public and private facilities in the local area
  • Developed steep slope (>80%) methodology that involved hand fallers, a spyder hoe and ground crews
